Journal

I am more than thankful to be given the opportunity to do research on something we all wanted to talk about. The presentations are coming out really great and it is really showing how much effort most us put in it. First teacher who has given us this opportunity. I really hope that the people who have not yet presented do put in lots of effort and rock their topic because chances like this are hardly given to students. It's really intresting knowing different things that people wanted to know about.

Presentations

Axel Villa
Topic : Who killed Biggie and Pac?
It was a good topic because we all know who they are and how big of artists they were. There was facts in there that I'm sure all of us did not know so not only did he explain himself and his question  but also he let us know facts we were curious about. It was an intresting topic and may those two amazing artists Rest In Peace.

Joe

Very intresting topic. He caught my attention almost right away. I am am mind blown. SPEECHLESS.

Gladis

It's a topic we all need to hear and talk about. Most of the things I heard were things all juniors had to attend a meeting to know these things. It is very important.

Presentations

Angel :
Topic : Migrant workers
Migrant workers actually make up the U.S food system. They don't get recognized for it most of the time. A lot of the time they go through abuse, discrimination and deportation. I agree with him when he says field work is tough. It is. I know from experience. The first couple days you come home with back pains, with sunburns, and head aches. All races work differently and most people in different races work hard, but I can proudly say that Mexicans are very hard workers. I have not seen anyone work as hard as us. We do the job that others do not want to do, not because they can't do it BUT because they do not want to do that hard work. I also agree that we need to be treated equally and get the same respect as others do. Loved his presentation.

Journal

The presentations have all been good. When I presented mine I was surprised that I lasted 10 minutes.  Its actually not that hard to if you're happy to present what you're presenting. I learned lots of things not only from my question but from others dad well. I now know not to sleep on my back, thanks to Yasmin, I know more about everyone having fears and overcoming them on stage thanks to Jorge & the list goes on. I actually am very thankful for this opportunity because we all learn interesting things a lot of things some of us actually wanted to know about.

Presentation

Yasmin Ocampo :
Topic : Sleep Paralysis
The video she showed really did catch all of our attentions and it was a good video that described some of the basics of it. She explained it in more depth and it is weird that you're more likely to get it when you are laying down on your back because every time I sleep on my back I dream something bad and i always dream that there's something standing at my door with the door open just staring at me as I stare back. The example she gave was about a girl named Jamie Jackson that she had that happen to her and no one believed her it's hard for someone to believe you because things like this don't usually happen so when things lie this do happen people do not believe it.

Journal

California is such a BAD ASS state!! For the reasons that the weather here is amazing. Lots of big artist live here, oceans surround us. California is just a GO TO. I would never live out of California. There is just so many places to visit that are breathtaking. Lots of people that come to California want to move in and that is a fact, because i know of some people that do not want to leave.

Presentations

Jorge Araiza :
Topic : Acting Presentation
Notes : He really did get our attentions when he made us all stand up and just SHAKE. He was explaining how people need to get out of their comfort zone. Well today was the day where those who are not comfortable with just shaking with others were kinda of forced to. In my opinion, it felt good standing up and just being goofy with the class. It helped his presentation a lot. The monologue he gave was amazing.

Journal

What makes you want to listen to someone and/or trust what s/he says?  What makes you less likely to listen to someone and trust what s/he says?  Describe at least two examples.

What makes me believe someone is dependent on their loyalty to me and to others. If I know that they have not been loyal to others what will make me think that they will be loyal to me. People can say things like "I'll be loyal to you." It gets people thinking like wow, he or she thinks I am different so it'll be different with you, relationship wise or friendship wise. I am not like that. I am not gullible. I can fall for lies, but not for most of them. So what makes me not believe someone? Well obviously their past. People change, yes.  But it is rare.

Journal

I don't think anything is really private. Nothing at school is private. Nothing in the world outside of school is private. How about our home? Uh think again. You're not home I am sure our parents or someone invades our privacy. We really do not have any privacy at all. Yeah it sucks. But what is there to do? People are not mysterious at all because us, ourselves let out our personal things out there. So we have proved to ourselves that we can't even trust our own selves. Fishes are mysterious, actually most animals are mysterious and they have great privacy, but we don't. The government probably knows more about us than we do about ourselves. They probably know what move we're going to do next. Someone is probably observing us and we don't even know it.

The Digital Divide

I don't think anyone stands on their own because everyone in their own ways is addicted to the internet. So where do I stand? I'm just another person using the internet unwisely. I would say it's a help to achieve my goals, but it also distracts me from a lot of things and spit can hold back a lot for a lot of other things. My data is not protected at all. Which is uncomfortable to know.

Journal

Today my journal is going to be about how excited I am about my big question. No offense but this is about the 3rd time i really am excited about something we do in class. It's exciting because like WOW! A teacher actually is letting us do a research on something we would actually enjoy working on and researching on. I really do appreciate that.

Opinion on today.

Everyone got really different questions. From wifi questions to religious questions. Lots of the questions that were talked about also have came up in my mind and I really hope they take the time and effort to study about it and explain to us what they learned throughout their research! I know I will because I really want to know what more open minded people, like philosophers have to say about this.

My Ignite Talk

Topic -
-
Was religion invented to control people?
What i did over break to explore my big question?
- I thought i was going to do another question, until my team and I put our minds together and thought about other things and religion was brought up. So I did my research today.
Something learned by doing the research:
- Religion can used to control people, but if religion is considered to control people, so can schools, so can marriage,so can the military .. and the list goes on.

A connection made from this course and my big question :
Fahrenheit 451  had people thinking a certain way and to me i saw a connection to religion having people think a certain way too.
Next step
Doing more research.

Final Big Question.

Was religion invented to control people?
 My source :  https://carm.org/was-religion-invented-to-control-people

P.S. I have not started reading on this website yet. So before I do start doing my research I want to say my thoughts and my opinion, so I can compare on how well informed I will be.... I'm Catholic, so I do believe in Jesus, in Virgin Mary and angels, in miracles  etc.. With that being said I do wonder if it at times religion was created by a person, not very much different like us. There is times where i think it was created to control the public, you chose your religion or sometimes you're just born into it and keep it that way for the rest of your life. It makes sense to create something like regulations that a group of people look up to that says is good to do and that'll be the way you'll get into Heaven. Imagine life without religion.. no morals .. no sins .. people would not have anything to keep them under control other than of course the laws created by the government. It would be harder to keep people under control because there would not be anything they would look for, after death. So I am sure the majority of people would do what they feel is right. Not what the Holy Bible or a preacher says to do. I love my religion, but there is nothing wrong with being informed about other things and expanding your mind. So i do thank Dr. Preston for the time he is giving us to be informed about something we are truly passionate about.

Another comment for the pre-essay socratic seminar

I believe that students feel much comfortable typing things out because they're afraid to say something wrong through messages you can just say something else, erase it and then send it or post it but when you're actually taking or commenting something you can't just go back and re-phrase it without loosin peopls intrest. @Jesusmuñozcomment

My comment on today's pre-essay socratic seminar

When Jish asked the question, "Who bombed the city?" & we all knew that it was never told. To me right away I connected it & linked it as another example of how blindfolded people live in the story. Government doesn't care for their people, they don't them "getting out of control" but in all truths they don't want their people being smart because if they were smart they would stand up for themselves, but the government wants to keep on controlling all of them. So to me, i saw it as another example of them (the people) being blind and not caring for much. Just doing what they are being told.

My opinion on reading in class

I totally agree that people read at different paces and sometimes you want to go back, but you can't when you're forced to read with a group. Because not everyone will want to go back. Reading individually, in my opinion is much better. I can read st my pace with out anyone telling me "We went over that already" I have to be able to understand it in able to move on. So I think we all needed this in some way or form.

12 Questions about Fahrenheit 451

1.The novel Fahrenheit 451 begins : “It was a pleasure to burn.” Why does Ray Bradbury start the novel in this way? Why might it be more pleasurable to burn books rather than read them?
- Maybe because it's illegal and people in that society don't read them they burn them.
2. In the opening scene, why are the books compared to birds?
-Books are compared to birds bc as birds fly away books can trigger thought in our minds
3. Discuss the difference between Montag and Clarisse’s lives.
-Calrisse thinks about the world while Milred doesn't, all she does is watch tv.

5. Why does the narrator introduce us to Montag at this time of his life, when he encounters Clarisse and confronts Mildred’s overdose?
-so we can see how much Montag is changing throughout the book
6. Why does the author introduce the character of Clarisse before Mildred?
-Because before he met Clarisse he thought differently. She slowly starts putting ideas into his head and asks if he's happy, then he gets home and his wife died. So everything is falling apart for him.
7. Why are all the houses fireproof in this society?
-Because firemen no longer put out fires, they start fires to burn books. So to make burning books safer they fireproofed the houses.
8. Why does Mildred require emergency service? What service is provided?
- Because his wife overdosed on pills. The service they provide isn't so professional and not taken with much care because a lot of people overdose during that period of time.
9. What is the mechanical hound and what is its purpose?
-Some type of machine thing to kill people who disobey the laws
10. Why does the society consider Clarisse “anti-social”?
-Because people don't ask questions and they live in a bad environment.
11. When the woman’s house is raided, why does she light the match?
- To burn with her books.
12. Describe the relationship between Montag and Mildred.
- They're very different people and especially now that Montag met Clarisse he doesn't have that same connection as before.

My new beginning of the Story

Since I'm not good at creating my own story, I'm going to share ideas of what could have been another great way of starting the book:
... While I was reading the story I had a feeling Montag would have caught her something more unusual or strange for example holding the front cover of a burnt book. That to me would have created more suspense and would have me and I'm sure others hooked and CURIOUS...like she was. That also could have created Montag's mind to start flipping out like WHY?! WHY is she holding it, what's her purpose, does she disagree with the rules or?? The first six pages could have created for me more urge to keep reading if it got the characters flipping it out because I would have done the exact same.

Guiding questions

Describe the society (a fictional America) that Montag lives in. In what ways is it similiar to, but more extreme than, our society?  What signs are there that it is a "dystopia" (the opposite of utopia/ideal society)?

- I get a feeling that Montag lives in a society where you don't ask questions. Where curiosity is bad, like if you were expected to think a certain way, act a certain way, and live a certain way. Society today is more about wanting to learn new things. For example, my friends and I ask questions like crazy when we want to learn more about that certain topic. Unlike Montag he's more concerned on staying "inbetween the margins". In the first 6 pages we get signs and we already start to feel that they live in a society full of dystopia. For the reasons that asking questions is like WHAT?! Curiosity is not normal, also they burn books.
2. What makes Clarisse so special?  So different from most people in her society?

- She's distinct from the rest because she's not only young, but she views things differently. She inspects everything from top to bottom. She wants to be informed. She's a girl who's full curiosity, she's a character who's gonna have a much more different way of thinking than others.

3. Why do you think the mechanical hound has been programmed to react to Montag?

- I don't understand this question. :/

WHAT I SEE IN LITERATURE

-So in The Great Gatsby the theme that i picked up on was love, was determination, also in some ways being  scared of not being able to change the past .. . so you can say low acceptance of things. Why? Well because in the story Gatsby was crazy in love with Daisy, he DIED for love. Determination because Gatsby never stops trying to get Daisy back, or to get Daisy to say that she never loved Tom, and finally low acceptance of things because he never wanted to accept the fact that he couldn't change the past. He strongly believed you could.

- In Prufrock i get a feeling that he also is scared of accepting the fact that things will get old. Just like Gatsby was scared that he couldn't change the past or that Daisy's love for Gatsby go told as well.

Prufrock

this poem has a lot of turns. I'm still tying to wrap my mind around it. Hahaha. It seems really intresting though, I have a feeling it's going to be good.

Connection I made to the ending of The Great Gatsby

I love the way the story ends. It ends with this line "So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past."  Because there's so many things you can relate that line to. For example, Gatsby all his life wanted to fix the past and make things right. Then he dies, it takes us back to where he lost her again, only this time he won't come back. That last line does pretty much sums up the whole story. I love it.

John Steinbeck

I totally agree with Mr. Steinbeck. He states that there's always going to be evil so there isn't point in trying to get rid of it. I believe being mean sometimes is just a trait that every human has. So there's no way that all evil is going to be gone it's always going to going on, decade after decade after decade.

everything is a remix

so a remix is taking a song & adding more to it and changing things.
I strongly agree. That is what really came out to me throughout the video.
Everything actually is a remix, starting big from something like constitution, it's got changed and new things were added, to small things like puberty hitting a 13 year old, it changes your appearance.

"MUSIC AS LITERATURE"

Can we consider music to be literature? What is the difference between a novel, a poem, a rap, a song, an opera, and a symphony?

We can consider music to be literature because basically what music is words and sometimes a story is being told, just with sound. Which actually gives you a certain type of feeling and emotion just like reading a book would, when something is about to happen. The difference between a novel, a poem and raps, songs, operas and symphonies is just that there's sound to raps, songs, operas and symphonies. There's usually a purpose for all those, whether it is to tell a story or just to entertain. So to me, there isn't really much a difference.

GENESIS: THE BACKGROUND OF MY BIG QUESTION

My big question is WHY DO PEOPLE FOLLOW RULES? WHY DO PEOPLE DO WHAT OTHER PEOPLE TELL THEM TO. IS IT FOR SATISFACTION IN THEMSELVES? OR??

The interest for my BQ came from all the reading that we read in class about people being sheep and following what others do. So i thought to myself "Why do we do what others tell us to do?" Sometimes we don't like what we are told to do, yet we still do it. So it this another connection to people being sheep? If that's the case then the skill i'm trying to acquire is to speak up and if i don't like what i'm being told to do, for good reasons i can argue about it with someone and win the argument and not have to put up with what they are telling me, because as if for me i do not want to be someone's sheep, i do not want to blend in with the others.

Research on Paul Simon's album Graceland

In my very own opinion I believe Graceland can, or at least is considered to me an American Literature. The notes we took in class said that "American" is anyone who is somehow related to the United States. With that being said Paul Simon was from the United States, he just had an idea to combine two whole different types of music and come up with a whole new type of music. His music comes from two different types of roots, one of them is American pop music and the other is African music. Which proves my point. :)
