12 Questions about Fahrenheit 451

1.The novel Fahrenheit 451 begins : “It was a pleasure to burn.” Why does Ray Bradbury start the novel in this way? Why might it be more pleasurable to burn books rather than read them?

- Maybe because it's illegal and people in that society don't read them they burn them. 
2. In the opening scene, why are the books compared to birds?

-Books are compared to birds bc as birds fly away books can trigger thought in our minds
3. Discuss the difference between Montag and Clarisse’s lives.

-Calrisse thinks about the world while Milred doesn't, all she does is watch tv.

5. Why does the narrator introduce us to Montag at this time of his life, when he encounters Clarisse and confronts Mildred’s overdose?

-so we can see how much Montag is changing throughout the book 

6. Why does the author introduce the character of Clarisse before Mildred?
-Because before he met Clarisse he thought differently. She slowly starts putting ideas into his head and asks if he's happy, then he gets home and his wife died. So everything is falling apart for him. 
7. Why are all the houses fireproof in this society?
-Because firemen no longer put out fires, they start fires to burn books. So to make burning books safer they fireproofed the houses. 
8. Why does Mildred require emergency service? What service is provided?
- Because his wife overdosed on pills. The service they provide isn't so professional and not taken with much care because a lot of people overdose during that period of time. 
9. What is the mechanical hound and what is its purpose?
-Some type of machine thing to kill people who disobey the laws 
10. Why does the society consider Clarisse “anti-social”?
-Because people don't ask questions and they live in a bad environment.  
11. When the woman’s house is raided, why does she light the match?
- To burn with her books. 
12. Describe the relationship between Montag and Mildred.
- They're very different people and especially now that Montag met Clarisse he doesn't have that same connection as before.
